Which City Consumes the Most Drugs Across the Country?

The United States is reporting an increase in polydrug use across the nation. This means more people are using more types of drugs together than ever before. The Covid-19 pandemic may likely have instigated drug users to try new substances during the most intense lockdown. Additionally, the stay-at-home orders caused many people to become new addicts or new alcoholics.

Finally, the fear and worry of the world dying off from covid-19 placed many people who would not have ever turned to drugs or alcohol for relief to begin looking at it differently. As a result, the disease of addiction and or alcoholism affects nearly every city and community in the United States.

Which City Consumes the Most Drugs Across the Country?

The Cities with the Biggest Drug Consumption

The most recent reputable data from the Drug Enforcement Agency in their 2020 National Drug Threat Assessment stated that drug use continues to destroy more and more lives every day. The high light from their assessment discusses how incredibly influential our neighboring country Mexico is on the number of drugs inside the United States. A reference to polydrug use increase in the assessment explains that Mexico is moving tons of drugs of numerous types into the U.S. at an alarming rate. The reality is that drug addiction continued to rise during the pandemic and the drugs themselves matched the demand.

Also, in the DEA report, much is discussed about Controlled Prescription Drugs such as opioid pain killers, stimulants, and benzodiazepines. The DEA drug assessment report noted the following with emphasis:

The report provides strategic analysis of the domestic drug situation during 2019 and the first half of 2020. Mexican transnational criminal organizations (TCO) are the greatest drug trafficking threat to the United States; they control most of the U.S. drug market and have established varied transportation routes, have advanced communications capabilities, and hold strong affiliations with criminal groups and gangs; in the United States. (DEA, 2021)

How Many People Suffer from Addiction?

The DEA also listed the prevalence of Fentanyl, methamphetamine, and controlled prescriptions drugs as the central substances for illegal drug use. In addition, the number of people who suffer from the disease of addiction in 2019 and 2020 according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse states that nearly 20 million American adults (aged 12 and older) battled a substance use disorder in 2019” (NIDA)

The city to have been found to have the highest drug use rates in the United States in Cincinnati, Ohio. The findings that show why Cincinnati is so infiltrated with drug addiction is that it is a poorer community and is located a short distance from major cities used to distribute illegal drugs, such as New York and Chicago. The rate of drug use also reflects the total population. Compared to major cities with more significant proportions and high rates of drug use Washington D.C. is the city with the most drugs.

Difference Between West and East Coast Related to Drug Use

The issue of drug use in individual cities also relates to trends in the town itself. For example, the west coast cities have far more methamphetamine addiction than east coast cities that mainly struggle with cocaine and heroin. However, the most critical aspect of why cities have drug use problems is that people addicted to drugs need professional help. They are often victims of trauma, abuse, or family history of addictions and do not know another way to feel better other than to use drugs and alcohol. The answer is to get help at a professional drug addiction treatment center.
